In Happy's Words
Why I'm Running
A personal statement from Allegra "Happy" Haynes.
I am running for the Denver Public Schools Board of Education because I believe deeply in the power of public education to transform lives. I am a product of Denver Public Schools. I know what it means when a child has access to great teachers, supportive schools, and a community that believes in them.
For more than thirty years, I have worked to make Denver a better place for children and families. On the City Council, in the Mayor's office, and at DPS, I have seen what happens when we invest in our kids and what happens when we don't. I have seen the power of community engagement to shape better policy, and I have seen the consequences when decisions are made without the input of the people they affect most.
I am running because the Board needs members who understand both the promise and the complexity of public education in a diverse urban district. Members who can bring people together across differences. Members who will listen first and act decisively. Members who believe that every child — regardless of their zip code, their background, or their circumstances — deserves a world-class education.
As Chief Community Engagement Officer at DPS, I worked every day to build bridges between the district and the communities it serves. I led parent engagement efforts, built collaborative partnerships, and managed the district's relationships with elected officials and community organizations. That experience taught me that the best decisions are made when everyone has a seat at the table.
I am asking for your vote because I believe my experience, my relationships, and my deep commitment to Denver's children make me the right person for this job. I am not running to advance any ideology or agenda. I am running to serve kids.
Every child. Every neighborhood. Every school.
